Set off from Auckland down the main state highway, through small rural townships steeped in early pioneer history. A morning snack will be served en route. Continue through New Zealand´s largest dairy and sheep farming province to the Waitomo Glowworm Caves.
See huge underground caverns and impressive limestone rock formations during your 45-minute Waitomo Caves guided tour, and finish with a gentle boat ride along an underground stream, drifting past thousands of glow worms lighting up the cave walls.
A packed lunch is served on board the coach as your tour continues from the Waitomo Caves to Rotorua. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to the Skyline Gondola. Located on the side of Mt Ngongotaha, the gondola will carry you to the summit 487 metres above sea level, where you can enjoy panoramic views of Rotorua and its surroundings.
Rejoin the coach for a visit to Te Puia, home of New Zealand's Māori Arts and Crafts Institute. Your visit will commence with a 40-minute Māori cultural performance. This performance includes a welcome Powhiri, Haka, Poi Dance, and Stick Games. Some members of the audience will be invited to participate in a Haka (war dance).
Following the performance, join a guided tour of Te Puia. Learn the history behind Māori carving, weaving and their pre-European lifestyle. Your final stop in Rotorua is a visit to the Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley to see the famous Pohutu Geyser, which releases jets of steam up to 30 metres into the air. You'll also see other geothermal features including boiling mud pools, fumaroles and colourful silica deposits.
Your Gray Line luxury tour coach will bring you back to Auckland in the evening, with complimentary selected hotel dropooffs in the central city.
